Bachelor of Māori Lifestyle Advancement.
Poutuarongo Kawa Oranga.

Our flagship programme, Poutuarongo Kawa Oranga is a 3-year degree fulltime course of study that combines sport, exercise and Māori Wellbeing. The programme is designed for students who may:

  • Have a long term career interest in sport, exercise or Māori Wellbeing;
  • Wish to enhance their own wellbeing through the acquisition of skills and knowledge in sport, exercise and Māori Wellbeing;
  • Have a desire to share new skills and knowledge in sports, exercise and Māori Wellbeing with whānau, marae, kura or work colleagues.

Five specialist noho (residentials) are held throughout the year for a duration of five days per noho. Students participate in a range of practical and theory-based activities that focus wherever possible on providing hands-on learning experiences and situations. Examples of noho-based activities include:

  • Regular classes in a specialist exercise science lab;
  • Resistance training and cardiovascular exercise classes in a large commercial exercise facility;
  • Outdoor tramps and hīkoi to Kāpiti Island and Tararua Ranges;
  • Learning traditional Māori sports such as Kī-ō-Rahi;
  • Guest speaker presentations from successful Māori sportspeople, coaches, exercise professionals, health and wellbeing experts and industry professionals;
  • Facilitating and instructing sports skills sessions, group exercise sessions and one to one training.
